Cal Santa Barbara dealt the University of Hawaii at key loss in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball playoff race.
Miles Evans put down 14 kills — 12 coming in the first two sets as his team took the lead Friday — and the Gauchos held off the Warriors 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22 at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Hawaii (9-14, 8-13), which is battling with Santa Barbara (13-12, 9-10) to qualify for the eight-team league tournament, saw a four-match home winning streak end.
Opposite Brook Sedore (15 kills) and outside hitters Sinisa Zarkovic (13) and JP Marks (12) combined for 40 of Hawaii’s 53 kills. The Warriors, who are 10th in the league standings, were outhit .280-.260.
Evan Licht added 12 kills and 11 digs for the Gauchos — who are in a three-way tie for seventh — including a kill that set up match point. Andrew Kocur’s followed with a kill, helping Santa Barbara end the match on a 9-2 run.
The teams match up again today at 7 p.m. (OC16).
Softball
Hawaii 5, Cal Davis 4, 10 innings: Freshman Keiki Carlos’ second home run of the game, a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifted the Rainbow Wahine at home.
Senior left-hander Kaia Parnaby (24-3) went the distance and struck out 11
Carlos finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fifth that gave Hawaii (26-7, 4-0) a 4-3 lead.
Jazmine Zamora was 2 for 4 for Hawaii and Kelly Majam scored two runs.
Parnaby settled after allowing Kelly Schulze’s two-run home run in the first, allowed nine hits, four runs —three earned — and three walks.
JJ Wagoner tied it in the sixth for Aggies (13-15, 0-1) with an RBI single.
Justine Vela (8-3) also went the distance and registered 11 strikeouts. She walked five and gave up five hits.
Water polo
San Diego State 10, Hawaii 7: Amber Pezolla scored five goals as the Aztecs never trailed at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex in Honolulu to win their seventh straight.
Monika Eggens tallied her 13th hat trick of the season for the Rainbow Wahine (12-8, 3-1 Big West), and Paula Chillida Esforzado scored twice.
Alex Ford added two goals for San Diego State (20-7, 4-1), which used a 5-1 scoring spree in the third quarter to pull away from a match that had been tied at halftime.
Emily Carr and Amarens Genee also found the net for Hawaii.
