Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunken driving during the first week of April. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 361 DUI arrests compared with 392 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district for the week/year-to-date are Hamakua, 0/4; North Hilo, 0/2; South Hilo, 5/130; Puna, 1/33; Kau, 2/7; Kona, 6/158; South Kohala, 2/23; and North Kohala, 2/4.
There have been 344 major accidents so far this year compared with 410 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.1 percent.
So far this year, there were 11 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with nine during the same period last year, an increase of 22.2 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide, police said.
