Once again, the University of Hawaii couldn’t dent the scoreboard with a crooked number on the road.
Scott Squier pitched well but UCLA made him pay for a wild third inning as the Warriors lost their fifth straight baseball game, 5-1 in Los Angeles.
Hawaii (7-22) outhit the Bruins (20-9) 5-4, but its offensive road woes continued. Marc Flores broke an 0-for-13 slump with a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning, but UH fell to 0-4 on its California trip and has managed only three runs in the process.
Squier (0-5) struck out seven in solid seven innings, but two walks, a hit batsman and an error hurt him in the third as UCLA scored three runs. Brenton Allen’s RBI triple gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
Squier, who retired 11 straight after second baseman Stephen Ventimilia’s error with the bases loaded in the third, allowed two hits, three runs — two earned — and three walks.
Cody Poteet (2-3), the first of six Bruins pitchers, worked five scoreless innings to get the win, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikouts. Shane Zeile was 2 for 4 with a double and Pat Gallagher hit a run-scoring double in the eighth off of reliever Jon Flinn.
Trevor Podratz was 2 for 4, and Piikea Kitamura singled and scored for UH, which resumes Big West play on Friday at Cal Poly when it opens a three-game series.
