Community emergency response teams in Volcano and Puna will conduct a drill Saturday to test their HAM radios.

Community emergency response teams in Volcano and Puna will conduct a drill Saturday to test their HAM radios.

During the drill, beginning at 1 p.m., radio operators will pretend a disaster has isolated their communities, leaving them with the radios as the only means of communication.

Hawaii County Civil Defense staff say that residents who may catch their conversations over scanners should note that it’s only an exercise.

Radio operators will state “exercise” three times during their transmissions as a precaution.

Bill Hanson, Civil Defense administrative officer, said the goal is to improve “community resiliency” during an emergency, and the agency hopes to expand the drills to other response teams around the island.
