HONOLULU (AP) — Scientists say they’ve captured the first video evidence that feral cats prey on an endangered seabird called the Hawaiian petrel.
Researchers took more than 900 videos and almost 90 still photos of Hawaiian petrel nest burrows within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the study in the latest issue of the journal Pacific Conservation Biology.
One video shot in 2008 shows a cat waiting near a burrow entrance for over an hour before it grabs a chick that emerges. Researchers found the chick’s remains nearby.
The scientists documented nine other cases of cats attacking the seabirds in 2007 and 2008.
The Hawaiian pretrel or uau was once abundant on all main Hawaiian islands except Niihau. It was listed as an endangered species in 1967.
