Matt Cooper’s rough outing couldn’t have come at a worse time for the University of Hawaii.
Cal Northridge strung together five straight singles Saturday during a four-run third inning to beat the Warriors 9-4 in Honolulu.
With the Warriors (8-26, 3-8) in the midst of a hitting slump, Cooper (2-5) allowed season highs of 10 hits and seven earned runs.
Kalei Hanawahine was 3 for 3 with a two-run double in the second inning that put Hawaii ahead 2-1.
The lead was short-lived as the Matadors (21-17, 7-4) collected six of their 14 hits in the third.
Nicolas Osuna led off with a single and scored on Kyle Attl’s RBI double, and Josh Goossen-Brown and Alexis Mercado followed with run-scoring singles.
Chester Pak was 3 for 5 for Northridge and scored twice and Nate Ring was 2 for 5 with a run. Goossen-Brown finished 3 for 5, including a two-run single that gave the Matadors an 8-4 lead in the sixth, and Mercado went 2 for 4 and doubled in a run in the second. Anthony Lombardo drove in two runs.
Calvin Copping (4-3) was pulled after allowing Austin Wobrock’s RBI single in the sixth, but he yielded four hits and four runs to get the win. He walked three and struck out two. DJ Milam allowed a hit but got the final out of the eighth and pitched the ninth for his second save.
Piikea Kitamura was 2 for 3 and hit a sacrifice fly for Hawaii, which will try to salvage the final game of the three-game series at 12:30 p.m. today (OC-16).
In 5 1/3 innings, Cooper walked one and struck out four.
Softball
Hawaii 2, Cal Poly 1: Kaia Parnaby pitched a four-hitter and Jessica Iwata drove in both runs as the Rainbow Wahine completed a sweep in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
A day after she set her school’s single-season record for wins, Parnaby (34-4) allowed a run and a walk with three strikeouts as Hawaii (37-8, 14-1 Big West) won for the 17th time in 18 games. The senior left-hander was only touched up by Mariah Cochiolo’s RBI double in the first.
Iwata finished 3 for 3. In the top of the first, Kayla Wartner singled, moved to third on Keiki Carlos’ double and scored on Iwata’s single through the left side.
Hawaii took the lead for good in the third when Iwata’s single through the right side scored Kelly Majam, who led off the inning with a hit.
Chloe Wurst (10-14) went the distance and took the loss, allowing seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Their 6-1 road trip complete, the Wahine open a homestand against Cal State Fullerton on Friday.
