The University of Hawaii at Hilo Jazz Orchestra will perform Soul Session 2013 on Thursday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the UH-Hilo Performing Arts Center.
Under the direction of Trever Veilleux, the Jazz Orchestra is comprised of UH-Hilo students.
The concert will feature live rock-jazz-soul music, including performances of music by artists such as Frank Zappa, Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Chick Correa, Steely Dan, Duke Ellington and Meatloaf.
The concert also pays a tribute to the great soul singers of the 1960s, featuring special guest vocalists Ka‘iulani Lum-Ho, Justin Chittams, Kimo Apaka, Lilinoe Kauahikaua, Josh Timmons, Scott Wuscher, Christina Hussey and Kawai Soares, with choreography by Dori Yamada.

Woman’s Club sale is Saturday
The Hilo Woman’s Club will hold its semi-annual rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the clubhouse located at 7 Lele St. in Hilo.
The event is known for affordable prices on clothing, kitchen, bedroom, outdoor, indoor, decorative, jewelry and accessories.
Delicious baked goods will also be for sale during the event.

Hawaii National promotes Mende
Hawaii National Bank announces that Donn Mende has been promoted from assistant vice president and manager to vice president and manager at the Puainako Branch in Hilo. Mende has more than 20 years of finance experience, including investment and trust operations, and commercial banking.
In his position, Mende will be responsible for business development on Hawaii Island, as well as consumer and commercial loan underwriting, and overseeing the branch’s operations.
