During the week of April 22-28, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunken driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, 9; Puna, 6; Hamakua, 2; and South Kohala, 1.
So far this year, there have been 437 DUI arrests compared to 464 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8 percent.
There have been 427 major accidents so far this year compared to 494 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.1 percent.
To date, one of those fatalities has been linked to drugs, while another two have been linked to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
