The 2013 Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 25-27 at the Honokaa P&R Gym.

The camp is for children who just completed Kindergarten through 8th grade. Registration will begin at the Honokaa P&R Gym on May 25 at 7:30 a.m. for grades K-3 or 8 years old and younger; and at 12 p.m. for grades 4-8 or 9 years old and older.

The sessions start at 8:30 a.m. for K-3 and 1 p.m. for grades 4-8.

Applications may be picked up at the Honokaa P&R Gym from Anna Muranaka or at Honokaa High and Intermediate School (ask for Daphne Honma). The camp fee is $50 and includes instruction, T-shirt and a basketball. Checks should be made payable to Big Island All-Stars and write in memo “Honokaa Basketball Camp.”

The completed application form and fee can be mailed to: Daphne Honma, P.O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI. 96776. The deadline to mail in applications is May 17. Walk-ins will be accepted. Each session is limited to 90 applicants.

The camp schedule follows:

• Saturday, May 25: Session I (K-3) 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Sesseion II (grade 4-8) 1 to 4:30 p.m.

• Sunday, May 26: Session I 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Session II 1 to 4:30 p.m.

• Monday, May 27: Session I 8:30 12 p.m.; Session II, 1 to 4:30 p.m. At 11:45 a.m., an awards ceremony will be held for K-3 and at 4:15 p.m. one will be held for grades 4-8.

This year the camp will be selling Domino’s Pizza (cheese or pepperoni) for $2 per slice between 12 and 1 p.m. as well as drinks for $1 every day.

Go-kart club racing

set for Saturday

The Orchid Island Ohana Kart Club will hold a points race on Saturday at Hilo Raceway, with gates opening at 8 a.m. and racing from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., a drivers’ meeting follows at 9:15 a.m. and practice goes on until 10 a.m.

Women’s hoops

Any teams interested in participating in a 35 and over women’s basketball 4 on 4 halfcourt league is asked to contact Kami Shigematsu at 981-2846 or Daphne Honma at 937-3223 to enter your team before Saturday. Entry fee will be $20 per player and the games will be played at the Panaewa Gym.

There will be an organizational meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Panaewa Gym. All teams will need to send a representative to this meeting. We will be discussing the schedule and dates as well as other operational things, a league spokesperson said.

Piopio Bears hoops

signups slated

The Piopio Bears Athletic Association will be holding registrations for the upcoming 2013 basketball season. Interested players should register at the Hilo Armory (upstairs) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, May 13.

Registration will be for girls 10-Under and 12 -Under. Registration is also for 6-7’s and 7-8 (mixed) and boys 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14. Age cut off date is Dec. 31.

Bring a copy of the participant’s birth certificate. Call either Dennis Onishi (443-9282) or Charlie Ikeda (936-4018) for questions.

Speed clinic

Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 6 and 7.

The clinic will begin at 10 a.m. both days, with clinic-day registration at 9 a.m. June 6.

The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days. Runners who register before May 10 receive a $10 discount.

High High bowling

sign-ups ongoing

Hilo High bowling coach Damien Chow is taking sign-ups for students who wish to be part of the bowling team next school year.

Registration is ongoing through May 31 at the school’s main office and at athletic director Sondra Lundvick’s office.

Students also can pick up physical forms and as well as other necessary paperwork (student participation; parent/guardian consent release; and assumption of risk), all of which must be turned in to Chow on the day of tryouts, which will be announced at a later date.
