Thanks in large part to fielding miscues, Kamehameha-Hawaii’s softball team found itself playing Kohala in a consolation bracket game Thursday at Maui’s Patsy Mink field.
This time, the Warriors were the beneficiaries of their opponent’s mistakes.
Kamehameha cashed in on three Cowgirls errors in the fifth inning, scoring four runs and pulling away for a 9-4 win over Kohala in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II tournament.
With the victory, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Warriors (17-2) advanced to today’s 2 p.m. fifth-place game, where they will face Oahu Interscholastic Association No. 3 seed Aiea (11-6).
Kohala, the BIIF’s No. 3 seed, ended its season 8-12.
Kamehameha, which committed two crucial errors in a state quarterfinal loss to Kauai on Wednesday, held a 4-2 lead over Kohala before putting together a four-run fifth that featured an RBI double from Mykala Tokunaga and a run-scoring single from Jaylen Shiroma.
Tokunaga, who pitched a complete game in the circle, finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs. She gave up four runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking two.
Kekailani Wong Yuen, who also drove in two runs, and Codi Kualii both went 2 for 4 for the Warriors.
Kohala starting pitcher Tiani Luga also went the distance, allowing nine runs — seven earned — on 13 hits. She struck out three and walked none.
At the plate, Tomiko Coito finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, including a run-scoring double in the seventh. Sheana Cazimero also went 2 for 4, and Briana Harrison was 2 for 3.
