The Hilo Photography Club has invited Kalapana Gardens photographer and videographer Leigh Hilbert to present his recent work at its May 15 meeting. Originally from Seattle, Hilbert moved to the Big Island in 1998 and has explored its diverse landscapes to create a collection of extraordinary images.

He states that he takes these photographs to honor and celebrate the natural beauty of the Earth. For over three decades, Hilbert’s award winning photos have been published in a wide variety of media in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. His images have been featured in Hawaiian Airlines Hana Hou in-flight magazine and other publications, national TV news reports and fine art galleries.

In March 2012, Hilbert photographed lava from Pu‘u ‘O‘o taking out forest and destroying of the home of Jack Thompson, last resident of Royal Gardens Subdivision.

In the past few years, Hilbert has become well known as a high definition videographer of the Kilauea lava flows and he is working on his second lava documentary film slated for film festivals in Fall of 2013.

The public is invited to attend the event at 7 p.m. at the Kamana Senior Center, 127 Kamana St., in Hilo. There is no admission fee.
