Hilo’s Kaylee Rapoza and Keaau’s Talon Ota have been named the winners of the 2013 Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarships, sponsored by the Big Island Road Runners.

Hilo’s Kaylee Rapoza and Keaau’s Talon Ota have been named the winners of the 2013 Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarships, sponsored by the Big Island Road Runners.

Each year the BIRR awards $1,000 to one male and one female student athlete who best exemplifies excellence in running, academics, volunteerism and overall citizenship.

Applicants were judged on academic achievements with a GPA of at least a 2.5, and involved in volunteer activities and community service. An essay was required on “How running has influenced or affected their life.”
