The Kamehameha-Hawaii water polo team spent all season working toward one goal: success at the highest level.
It took Iolani less than 30 minutes to deal the Warriors another dose of cold reality: the Interscholastic League of Honolulu elite are still in another class.
The Red Raiders used balance scoring Wednesday night to overpower Kamehameha 10-2 in the quarterfinals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament in Honolulu.
The Warriors had been encouraged by two earlier trips to Oahu season in which it went toe to toe against Hawaii’s best in tournaments. But for the fourth consecutive season, Kamehameha (12-1) ran roughshod over the Big Island Interscholastic Federation only to lose to an ILH foe at the state tournament — and all of those matches have been decided by five goals or more.
Allison Ifuku, Mollie Taylor, Elizabeth Barr and Kiana Harpstrite scored two goals apiece Wednesday for Iolani (4-4), which jumped out to a 8-1 lead at halftime. Jacie Fukada and Taryn Aranador also had goals for the Red Raiders, who will attempt to maintain their leagues’ dominance in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal today against Kahuku (16-0), the Oahu Interscholastic Association champion.
The ILH has accounted for all nine state winners since the tournament began — the last five by Punahou — and no non-ILH team has reached the final since Kahuku did in 2007.
Seniors Sydney Plunkett and Paula Imoto scored for Kamehameha, which will face Roosevelt (10-6), the OIA’s No. 5 team, at 4:30 p.m. today for a berth in Friday’s fifth-place match.
In another quarterfinal, Kahuku cruised past the Roughriders 12-5.
Punahou 16, Hawaii Prep 2: Saki Migliorato netted a hat trick and Kayla Rask, Emma Choy, Roxy Kiessling and Lauren Boyer each scored twice for the Buffanblu (7-0), who led 8-0 at halftime.
The ILH champion, which was also powered by goals from Natassia Dunn, Helena Schaefer, Amy Bolan, Turner Wong and Arjuna Heim, draws OIA runner-up Kapolei (14-2) in a 6 p.m. semifinal today.
Seniors Anu Nihipali and Bhillie Luciani scored for the BIIF runner-up Ka Makani (9-5). In a 3 p.m. fifth-place semifinal today, HPA plays Baldwin (8-1), Maui Interscholastic League champion.
