Luxury Waikiki hotel apologizes to Hawaii family
HONOLULU (AP) — A luxury Waikiki hotel has apologized to a Hawaii entertainer and his family after they claimed they were discriminated against.
Na Hoku Hanohano-award winner Weldon Kekauoha says Halekulani Hotel security asked him and his family to verify they were guests. He says another guest complained when she saw the family at the pool and wanted verification they were indeed guests.
KHON-TV reports Kekauoha asked security to verify if the woman was a guest as well, but security refused.
Hotel spokeswoman Diane Ako says the Halekulani’s general manager personally met with Kekauoha on Tuesday to apologize.
Ako says security personnel didn’t handle the situation appropriately and the hotel doesn’t tolerate bias or discrimination.
Hawaii News Now reports the hotel offered Kekauoha a free lunch but he declined.
