NEW YORK — Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte is being put on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left trapezius muscle in his upper back.
General manager Brian Cashman said Friday New York is playing it safe with its 40-year-old left-hander, who becomes the Yankees’ 13th player to go on the DL this year.
Vidal Nuno is being recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and will move into a rotation already missing Ivan Nova.
Pettitte feels sore but thinks that is from the severe spasms he experienced Thursday night against Seattle. He expects to return as soon as he is eligible.
The Yankees did not place catcher Chris Stewart on the DL after he injured a groin Thursday night. An MRI was negative and Stewart said he was feeling much better.
