The University of Dubuque Concert Choir will perform at 7 p.m. today at the Church of the Holy Cross at 440 W. Lanikaula St. in Hilo. The performance is free and open to the public.
The University of Dubuque Concert Choir will perform at 7 p.m. today at the Church of the Holy Cross at 440 W. Lanikaula St. in Hilo. The performance is free and open to the public.
The choir is on its third concert tour to Hawaii. The 40-voice choir is directed by Charles Barland, associate professor of music and department head for Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Dubuque. The choir has performed in 38 states and Puerto Rico under Barland’s direction, including performances in New York City, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Francisco, Pasadena, Las Vegas, Honolulu, and San Juan. The choir’s last performances in Hawaii were in 2009.
The UD Choir will be performing a range of music both sacred and secular from the 16th century through present-day, including a piece composed by one of the students in the choir. The styles of music range from classical to folk, spirituals and gospel-style pieces.
The University of Dubuque is celebrating 161 years of teaching and learning and is a fully-accredited four-year college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. In addition the university has a theological seminary educating pastors and preparing them for ordained ministry. The members of the choir come from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Germany.
