The Big Island Babes Junior Roller Derby league will start its summer session on Sunday, June 2. For eight Sundays, ending on July 21, practices will be held at the Wainaku Gym at 30 Aikane Loop.

No experience is required. All new skaters are invited to learn the basics from noon to 1 p.m. Cost for new participants is free. Coordinators also have limited loaner gear available for newbies to borrow for the beginner’s sessions.

Returning or experienced skaters will practice from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $50.

“All young ladies from the ages of 7-17 are encouraged to come and check out what roller derby is all about,” said Coach Stacey Breining.

“The Big Island Babes Junior Roller Derby league aims to empower young women. We build self esteem by fostering leadership skills and personal accountability,” said Breining.

“The (junior derby) creates a sisterhood of skaters and helps them to form positive relationships through respect, sportsmanship and team work. Communication skills are also very important and the skaters will learn positive ways to communicate between themselves as well as with the adults in the league.”
