Two qualifying spots

for U.S. Public Links
The USGA has allotted the Hilo Section two berths into the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. The national tournament will be held July 15-20, 2013 at the Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
A total of 40 entrants will compete for the coveted spots in a 36-hole qualifying round on Saturday, June 8 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Past qualifiers Dalen Yamauchi and Chris Igawa are entered and will be among the favorites to qualify. Other golfers who are expected to contend for the qualifying spots include 2012 BIIF Champion Ryley Chong, Casey Tamura, Ric Yamamoto, Shaun Downie, Douglas Oki and Clayton Amuro.

Hilo Junior Tennis
Club summer camp
The Hilo Junior Tennis Club’s summer camp will be held Tuesdays-Fridays from June 4-28 at Hilo Intermediate School tennis courts.
Beginners are scheduled from 9-11 a.m., with intermediate and advanced players from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration fees for beginners are $75 a week or $250 as lump sum. For intermediate and advanced players, the fee is $100 a week or $350 if paid as lump sum.
Registration requires membership in the Hilo Junior Tennis Club, which is $25 for new members, and the deadline to apply is June 3.
Instructors are Randy Kunimoto and Coach Kula Oda.

Keaau High seeking

Keaau High School is currently accepting applications for the following coaching positions: girls soccer, boys & girls tennis, and swimming. All interested applicants can obtain an application at the school’s main office, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pahoa seeking girls
basketball coach
The Pahoa High School athletic department is looking for a girls varsity head basketball coach. Duties include teaching/coaching of basketball techniques, and character development.
According to athletic director Rom Tomosada, preferable qualifications are previous coaching experience, NFHS fundamentals of coaching certification and effective communication.
Applications are available at the school’s main office or athletic office. The deadline to apply is June 10.

Men’s hoops tourney
slated for June 8-9
Eight teams are being sought for a men’s C Division basketball tournament, slated June 8-9 at the Carvalho Park Gym.
The tournament is a fundraiser for the Wahine Ryders 14 and under girls basketball team that will travel to play this summer in Las Vegas.
Entry fee for the men’s tournament is $300 per team.

Hilo girls volleyball
training sessions
The Hilo High School girls volleyball program will hold two conditioning/training sessions during the summer.
• Session I: June 10-14, and open to any high school students (all schools).
1. Journal writing, strategic planning & activities — Monday-Friday, 2 to 2:30 p.m.
2. Positions/volleyball skills, Monday-Friday, 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.
3. Team volleyball skills, Monday-Friday, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Cost is $40 for session.
• Session II: June 17-July 26, open to all Hilo High students.
1. Weight training and conditioning, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1 to 1:50 p.m.
2. Core strength and conditioning, Tuesday and Thursday, 1 to 1:50 p.m.
3. Journal writing, strategic planning and activities, Monday- Fridays, 2 to 2:30 p.m.
4. Positions/volleyball skills, Monday-Friday, 2:45 to 3:50 p.m.
5. Team volleyball skills, Monday-Friday, 4 to 4:50 p.m.
There is no fee to attend Session II.

Ex-major leaguer
holds summer camps
Former Major Leaguer Onan Masaoka and guest instructors will hold baseball camps throughout the summer at the MPRUV facility, located at 140 Holomua St. in Hilo.
Instruction in throwing/pitching, hitting, catching, and baseball conditioning will be offered.
Fees range from $60-$100, depending on single or multi-focus camp.

Challenger soccer
camps June 17-21
Challenger Sports and Puna AYSO 738 will hold a training camp June 17-21 at Shipman’s Fields in Keaau.
The camp is open to players ages 4 to 18 and will run Monday through Friday.
According to a camp release, the camp includes “a week of drills and skills, led by a British soccer coach. In addition to taking part in a daily regimen of foot skill development, technical and tactical practices and daily tournament style plays, each child will also be treated to a rich cultural experience and lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship.”
Camp sessions are offered for the following ages:
• Ages 6-16: 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $110
• Ages 10-16: 9 a.m.-3 p.m., $155
• Ages 6-16: 4– 7 p.m., $110
Teams are also welcome to attend and receive a week of focused instruction to prepare them for the fall season.
Each camper will receive a free camp T-shirt, soccer ball, giant soccer poster and an individual skills performance evaluation.
Space is limited – parents are encouraged to sign up on line in advance to avoid disappointment.
