Give Dad the gift of laughter by taking him to the Palace Theater on Father’s Day weekend.
The Palace’s comedy weekend kicks off Friday, June 14, at 7 p.m. as Hawaii’s favorite comic, Frank De Lima, brings his side-splitting song parodies and outrageous observations to the Palace stage.
For more than 35 years, De Lima has headlined nightclubs, performed at sold-out concerts and events throughout Hawaii and along the West Coast, and produced numerous audio and visual works. So far, his catalogue includes three videos and 17 comedy albums. He’s won 12 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, more than any other Hawaii comedian.
De Lima’s ethnic background, which he describes as “veritable Portuguese Soup” and “Chop Suey Nation,” consists of Portuguese, Hawaiian, Irish, Chinese, English, Spanish, and Scottish. He celebrates, not disregards, ethnic differences and integrates them into his comedic routines.
“Humor breaks down barriers and being able to laugh at one’s self is the first step down that road,” De Lima said.
In addition, De Lima has received numerous honors for his positive influence with Hawaii’s children. Awards include former Gov. Ben Cayetano’s Kilohana Award for Volunteer of the Year and the Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Award from the National Education Association.
In 1980, he founded the Frank De Lima Student Enrichment Program to help Hawaii’s students understand the importance of reading, studying, laughing, family, and life itself.
“The ability to draw laughter or a smile is one of the greatest gifts you can give to people,” De Lima said. “Laughter makes a happy heart.”

Adding to the Father’s Day fun, the Palace will screen the film “Na Ali‘i of Comedy” featuring De Lima and fellow comedy legends Andy Bumatai, Mel Cabang, Ed Ka‘ahea and Augie T. From backstage to onstage, “Na Ali‘i of Comedy” is an all-access pass to hilarity, Hawaiian style.
