During the week of May 27-June 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, 7; Puna, 2; and South Kohala, 1.
So far this year, there have been 555 DUI arrests compared to 610 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent.
There have been 584 major accidents so far this year compared to 635 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.
So far, one of those fatalities has been linked to drugs, another to alcohol, plus two to a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
