A large metal object, likely a buoy, that washed ashore in Ka‘u last October has been removed.
The 10-foot high and 20-foot wide yellow object was removed from the remote shoreline May 23 by Ka‘u Andrade Contracting.
The job cost the state Department of Land and Natural Resources $28,500, far less than the $100,000 that had been budgeted.
The object was thought to have been possible tsunami debris from Japan.
DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward said it is likely to have been used to tie up tankers at sea.
