The Hapuna Beach was closed this morning after a possible military ordnance was discovered.
Explosive experts from Schofield Barracks on Oahu have been called in to assess the device, possibly used for illumination, said Deborah Ward, state Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman.
“From the description, they thought it sounded like an illumination flare,” she said.
The explosive experts are expected to arrive at 4 p.m. today (Friday).
Ward said DLNR closed the park around the hours of 11:30 p.m. and noon after being notified.
A diver discovered the device while swimming near the shore of the park and brought it to land, she said.
