JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii-based destroyer USS Paul Hamilton is coming home after a nine-month deployment.
The guided-missile destroyer is scheduled to return to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Monday.
Navy Region Hawaii says the crew deployed in September and has been conducting a wide array of operations including counter-terrorism and combating transnational crime.
The deployment also included a port visit in Manila, where 24 Filipino-American Sailors were able to spend time with their families and friends who live in the Philippines.
Paul Hamilton is one of 11 surface combatants assigned to Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific and Destroyer Squadron 31.
Boy critical after ingesting dangerous drugs
HONOLULU (AP) — A 20-month-old boy is in critical condition after police say he ingested dangerous drugs while his mother was caring for him at their Pearl City home.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser cites police records in reporting that the child’s 42-year-old mother was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of second-degree assault.
It wasn’t immediately clear what type of drugs the boy ingested or whether they were of the prescription or illicit variety.
No names have been released.
Hiker survives 300-feet fall in Kaaawa
HONOLULU (AP) — A 23-year-old woman has suffered traumatic injuries to her leg and lower back after falling 300 feet from a hiking trail in Kaaawa.
A Honolulu fire official told the Star Advertiser that the woman was part of a six-person group that called for help from the Puu Manamana trail on Saturday.
Fire Capt. Chris Ah Mook Sang says the woman was airlifted to a hospital trauma center in serious condition.
The trail she was on separates Kahana Valley and Kaaawa Town.
Police investigating Waipahu car chase, shooting
WAIPAHU, Oahu (AP) — Police are investigating an attempted murder in Waipahu involving a car chase that ended in a shooting.
Police say an argument led to a car chase Thursday night between occupants of two cars. The car being pursued crashed near a Waipahu gas station.
Shots were fired and one of the bullets grazed a 48-year-old man. Hawaii News Now reports he refused medical treatment.
A second bullet struck a vehicle. A third bullet went through the window of a nearby home.
