Two Hawaii Island artists — Amber Aguirre and John Ferdico — will be included in the prestigious Artists of Hawaii 2013 exhibition opening Sept. 19 at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
Other artists to be featured in the show, which closes Nov. 24, are Roberta Griffith of Kauai, and Drew Broderick, Clarence Chun, Yumiko Glover, Kandi Everett, Ryan Higa, Chris Ritson, Russell Sunabe and William Williams III, all of Oahu.
Launched in 1950, the prestigious biannual exhibition highlighting the talents of island artists has undergone changes over the years. This year marks the latest format change. While Artists of Hawaii remains a juried exhibition, open to any artist residing in Hawaii, instead of submitting images of one to three works, as in the past, artists were invited to submit images of 10 to 12 pieces from the past several years that provide a more in-depth look at their work.
The museum received submissions from 341 artists last fall. Last week, the selection team reviewed the images submitted digitally, whittling down candidates in a series of rounds.
