During the week of June 17-23, 2013, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunken driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 5; South Hilo, 3; South Kohala, 2; Puna, 1.
So far this year, there have been 605 DUI arrests compared to 673 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.1 percent.
There have been 651 major accidents so far this year compared to 706 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.
To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alchol; and two, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
