Amy Chen, a recent Hilo High School graduate and member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony, will perform a free violin recital Saturday at 6 p.m. at First United Protestant Church, 1350 Waianuenue Ave., above Hilo Medical Center and Kaiser-Permanente Hilo Clinic.

Chen, who has been a student of violinist Michael Russell since 2008, ranks “among the best of her age in the state,” Russell said.

Her recital will consist of standard pieces from the violin repertoire: Beethoven, Romance in F major; Bach, Unaccompanied Sonata #1, in g minor, I. Adagio; Bruch, Concerto #1, in g min, I.; Sarasate, Malagueña Paganini, Caprice #16 for solo violin; and Mendelssohn, Concerto in e minor, I.

Chen will be attending Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, with plans to study music and architectural design.
