A search for a missing kayaker in South Kohala was suspended Saturday night after fruitless third day of scouring the coastline.

A search for a missing kayaker in South Kohala was suspended Saturday night after fruitless third day of scouring the coastline.

According to a written Fire Department release, the family of 66-year-old Steven Wycoff requested that authorities end the search Saturday if nothing was found.

Wycoff was last seen about 10 a.m. Thursday fishing in waters off the Kawaihae Harbor from his green kayak. His kayak was found about an hour later approximately 300 yards north of the harbor some 50 yards offshore.

The search was called off at about 4 p.m. Saturday after a shark was reportedly sighted near the harbor, according to West Hawaii Fire Battalion Chief Reuben Chun.
