Johnny Woodard hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the San Rafael Pacifics a 6-4 win over the visiting Hawaii Stars in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
In the opening game of the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball twinbill in San Rafael, Calif., the Pacifics (21-6) defeated the Stars 12-2 and took all six games in the series. Hawaii (12-18) has today off and will play Tuesday against the Vallejo Admirals in Vallejo, to start a six-game series.
In Sunday’s nightcap, Woodard and Price Kendall each had home runs and drove in two runs to lead the Pacifics. Katsuaki Furuki went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Stars while teammate Matt Hibbert cracked a solo homer.
AJ Gallardo, the third San Rafael hurler of the evening, picked up the win. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and two walks. Hawaii reliever Mike Jackson, the fourth Stars hurler to take the mound, took the loss. He allowed three runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.
In the first game at Alberts Field, Zack Pace had a double and three RBIs and Kevin Reinking went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Pacifics. Anthony Williams and Brendan Davis (double) each had two hits to lead the Stars.
Bennett Whitmore pitched all seven innings and recorded the victory. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter while giving up eight hits and two runs.
Cortney Arruda started for Hawaii and pitched three innings. He gave up 10 runs on 12 hits and took the loss.
