If you didn’t hear any tsunami sirens go off Monday during the monthly test, it’s because more than a dozen of them failed.
Civil defense officials confirmed Tuesday that 18 of the seventy-one sirens around the Big Island did not work. These were primarily in the Hilo and Puna areas.
Technicians from the Hawaii Police Department Radio Shop were dispatched to trouble-shoot a radio transmission repeater site in the Kulani area which provides for the radio signal communications link for those sirens, officials said.
Corrective actions were taken and preliminary tests conducted “to confirm system function and operability.”
A follow-up siren test will be conducted, and the public will be informed in advance of the test to avoid any confusion or concern.
