Police are investigating the body of a man found Friday night below a cliff at Kapanaia Beach in North Kohala.

Police are investigating the body of a man found Friday night below a cliff at Kapanaia Beach in North Kohala.

A shoreline fisherman reported about 6:50 p.m. seeing a body on the rocky coastline area known as “Hapu” near Kapanaia Beach, according to the Hawaii Fire Department, which arrived at the scene, accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles, at 6:58 p.m.

Officials said the man, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, was found 80 feet below on the shoreline.

According to the fire department, an unattended vehicle was found in the area.

Fire department personnel waited while Hawaii Police Department officers completed their investigation before retrieving the body. Because of the area’s terrain, rescue personnel based in Kailua-Kona assisted in the recovery effort.

The man was taken to Kohala Hospital.

The cause of death was unknown.
