During the week of July 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

During the week of July 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

DUI arrests by district are: South Hilo, 7; Kona, 5; Puna, 4; and South Kohala, 2.

So far this year, there have been 646 DUI arrests compared to 727 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.1 percent.

There have been 707 major accidents so far this year compared to 764 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.

To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
