Schatz raises over $900,000
HONOLULU (AP) — Sen. Brian Schatz raised more than $900,000 during the most recent quarter for his campaign to retain the senate seat he was appointed to in December.
The senator raised over $1.1 million in the January-March period. The campaign said Tuesday he’s raised more than $2 million altogether.
U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa hasn’t yet released fundraising figures for the April to June quarter. Hanabusa announced her candidacy for the senate seat in May.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Schatz to fill the vacancy created by Sen. Daniel Inouye’s death even though it was Inouye’s dying wish to have Hanabusa succeed him. Schatz was lieutenant governor at the time.
The Schatz campaign says 73 percent more individuals donated compared to January-March.
Commissaries, clinics cut back
HONOLULU (AP) — The effects of Defense Department cutbacks are starting to be felt in Hawaii.
A hospital, clinics, commissaries and a beach are affected by furloughs that began Monday because of budget cuts known as sequestration.
Congress approved $1.2 trillion in government cuts through 2021 unless alternatives were approved by March 1 and members could not agree on alternatives.
Shoppers Monday who showed up at the Pearl Harbor Commissary were turned away. Commissaries at Schofield, Hickam, and Kaneohe also are closed Mondays
The furloughs will affect 650,000 civilian defense workers.
That includes 14,000 commissary workers who are losing 20 percent of their pay.
Tripler Army Medical Center is reducing appointments and staff and Hickam Beach’s lifeguard hours have been reduced.

Capt. Bruce Hay is scheduled to take over from Capt. Nicholas Mongillo during a ceremony at the base’s operations hangar on Thursday.
Hay was most recently future aircraft carrier requirements officer with the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington.
The naval flight officer has flown more than 2,600 flight hours and made 802 carrier arrested landings. He made the first EA-6B Prowler night-vision device landing in Bagram, Afghanistan.
Mongillo is retiring after more than 27 years in the Navy.
The Pacific Missile Range Facility is the only range in the world where submarines, surface ships, aircraft and space vehicles can operate and be tracked simultaneously.
