The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival will present “The Art of Strings,” a multimedia show featuring the works of Hilo artist Christina Skaggs in collaboration with the HPAF String Program, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Palace Theater.

Director Iggy Jang, who is also the concertmaster of the Hawaii Symphony, will head a distinctive group of international faculty artists and 35 string students. Korean American violinist Chee Yun, who performs regularly with symphonies and festivals around the world, will be featured as well as Hilo’s own Quack Moore.
“I have taken part in multi-media productions in the past, but beyond the mixed medium idea, this collaboration is also about assembling beautiful resources from the Big Island — Christina’s body of work, the Hilo Palace Theater, pianist Quack Moore, and the music of the HPAF string program,”Jang said.
Pianist Moore will perform “A Suspended Liquid Veil” by University of Hawaii composer Donald Reid Womack. Jang describes it as very evocative, a “beautiful shroud of mist hanging magically in the air.”
Also planned is an improvisation by UH Masters’ piano student Grant Carvalho.
Skaggs will reveal a painting to the audience accompanied by Grant.
Chee-Yun’s return to the Palace will feature Mendelssohn’s Violin Concert, the music of Schumann, and Villa-Lobos’ “Brasileiras Bachianas No. 5” as sung by soprano Angie Engelbart,
“The idea of presenting my paintings on a large screen as a backdrop to live music has been an inspiring notion to me for a while now…. Technology has made this so doable that the multi sensual experience is almost an expectation of the times,” Skaggs said.
