The Hilo Community Players is offering a scholarship to provide financial assistance to local performing arts students. Applications are now being accepted for the Dr. Laura Andres Scholarship Fund, which was created to honor a longtime HCP actor and director, the late Laura Andres, PhD.
HCP will award a $500 scholarship for tuition at the University of Hawaii at Hilo to a student seeking a performing arts degree. The deadline for applying is Nov. 15; the scholarship will be awarded in January at a special HCP event. Applicants must be current full-time UHH students or incoming freshmen, accepted to the performing arts program with a drama concentration, and must maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA in performing arts course work.
There is an essay requirement, and a performance requirement; and applicants must also demonstrate prior experience in theater.
“Dr. Andres was a driving force in our productions for many years,” said Kamuela Bannister, chairman of HCP’s Scholarship Committee. “She not only acted on stage but also directed many shows. In her honor, and consistent with our mission statement, HCP encourages individuals to pursue studies in dramatic arts.”
Full details of the scholarship requirements are available in person, this month, at HCP’s production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” in Kalakaua Park; or by sending email to HCP at hilocommunityplayers@gmail.com.
