Bill Hanson, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrative officer, checks on the status of the county’s tsunami warning sirens during a test of the system Tuesday. The test was a follow-up to a drill earlier this month that found 18 sirens, mainly in the Hilo and Puna areas, failing to activate due to a malfunctioning radio transmission site. The problem was fixed, and all 71 sirens on the Big Isle were activated Tuesday, according to Civil Defense. Two sirens, one in Laupahoehoe and another in Paukaa, were reported to be activating for less time or quieter than normal.
