Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Friday announced the release of $650,000 in capital improvement funds for Kulani Correctional Facility. The money is to re-construct the controlled entryway/detention recreation yard, replace the existing furnace for the detention cells, relocate the dental office, as well as various electrical upgrades.
According to the Governor’s office, the renovations and improvements are needed to ensure the facility, which is planned to reopen as a prison, is suitable for a projected 200 inmates and that current code requirements are met.
The facility was formerly occupied by the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy.
The funds are part of $12.7 million released for state facilities and data systems throughout the islands.
The Big Island will also share in $364,000 in design funds for health and safety improvements at Department of Health facilities statewide. Big Island facilities receiving a portion of that funding are Hilo Counseling Center and Keawe Health Center.
“These projects will provide an immediate return in terms of jobs and boosting our economy, while delivering long-term benefits by improving our facilities and data network infrastructure,” Abercrombie said.
