During the week of July 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunken driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 7; Puna and South Hilo, 5 each; and South Kohala, 2.
So far this year, there have been 678 DUI arrests compared to 762 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11 percent.
There have been 760 major accidents so far this year compared to 813 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent. So far this year, there have been 19 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
