A hearing to determine the fitness of a murder suspect to stand trial has been postponed.
On Tuesday, Hilo District Judge Barbara Takase granted 44-year-old Seon Keoni Aki a contested hearing on mental evaluations by three mental health professionals. The court has received all three reports, but the reports’ contents are not public. The hearing was granted at the request of Aki’s attorney, Bill Heflin.
Aki is accused of the May 20 slaying of 40-year-old Mateo D. Balinbin Jr. of Nanawale Estates in Balinbin’s Maui Street residence, next door to Aki’s home. Police say Balinbin, aka “Braddah Boy,” was killed with a single gunshot to the head.
Aki remains in custody in Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $360,000 bail.
