HONOLULU (AP) — A Honolulu skydiver who died after losing consciousness while jumping from a plane was a decorated Army veteran.
Capt. Martin Monahan, 30, had been assigned to Schofield Barracks since 2010.
Monahan was practicing a maneuver when he attempted to jump over Dillingham Airfield on Tuesday.
Authorities say he lost consciousness and was unable to deploy his parachute. He died from his injuries the next day.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says Monahan had struck a horizontal stabilizer at the back of Skydive Hawaii’s Cessna Caravan aircraft shortly after the jump.
Monahan had served three tours in Afghanistan and twice received the bronze star.
Woman’s remains are laid to rest
HONOLULU (AP) — A surfer who found a sealed urn containing a California woman’s cremated remains on a Hawaii beach has laid the ashes to rest.
Heather Faustin scattered the ashes of Betty Rhea Hilton Hauptman on Saturday over waters just off Maunalua Bay in east Oahu.
Faustin says she was able to do it after getting final approval from Hauptman’s power of attorney.
Faustin, of Mililani, discovered the urn along the shore of Diamond Head beach in January. The wrapped plastic container was labeled with Hauptman’s name and city of residence, Marina del Rey, Calif.
Faustin found a contact after giving an interview to KHON-TV earlier this month.
A spokesman for the Southern California funeral home that cremated Hauptman said the urn was released to her power of attorney.

Police announced Saturday the arrest of a 41-year-old man at Ala Moana Center in the killing of Mary Beth San Juan.
Authorities have confirmed the suspect is Vernon Baker, who is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder. Authorities say he is an acquaintance of San Juan’s.
The Medical Examiner’s Office says San Juan was stabbed multiple times. Her body was found by her ex-husband Tuesday evening in the driveway of her Punahou Street home.
Protesters return to park after raid
HONOLULU (AP) — Members of a group formed as an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement have returned to a Honolulu park, despite the city forcibly removing their belongings.
Members of (de)Occupy Honolulu headed back to Thomas Square on Friday night.
On Thursday, city officials for the first time implemented an ordinance allowing them to remove items seen as “nuisances” from city sidewalks.
City Spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke says workers collected 10 bins of items and a 72-year-old man was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Counterfeit bus passes a problem
HONOLULU (AP) — Officials are warning Honolulu residents who ride the bus to be on the lookout for counterfeit passes.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell said at a news conference Friday that anyone caught using or selling fraudulent bus passes could face jail time.
Caldwell says even buying one could mean nearly a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
The city says it has only confiscated one phony monthly bus pass so far but officials believe there are more.
Director of Transportation Services Mike Formby says anyone making the passes is likely using expensive machines to make multiple passes at a time. The city confiscated 200 counterfeit passes in 2010. Officials say riders should obtain a pass only at authorized retailers.
