Police are searching for a 32-year-old man alleged to have carjacked a vehicle in Hilo this morning.
Capt. Robert Wagner said Jeremy Todd Rios stole the 2007 white Honda Accord after wrecking his own vehicle at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Ohea Street.
At the time, Rios was trying to evade officers responding to a report of a man brandishing a firearm on Kinoole Street at about 7:40 a.m., he said.
Rios got out of his vehicle at the scene of the wreck and stole the Accord from a woman who was stuck in traffic as a result of the collision, Wagner said.
It’s unclear if he brandished a weapon.
Rios then drove off, collided with another vehicle, before fleeing the scene, according to police.
Wagner said the Accord, license plate HHN 082, was last seen on Mauna Kea Access Road.
Police are searching the area, including both ends of Saddle Road, he said.
Rios is described as 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and numerous tattoos, including one on his throat/neck area depicting brass knuckles.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts or the stolen car can call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
