The fish were the big winners Thursday at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.
There was no change at the top heading into the final round. Laguna Nigel Billfish Club #2 California will start today with a 29-point lead over Port Vila Sport Fishing Club Vanuatu as the five-day tournament wraps up in West Hawaii waters.
Neither club added to its score Thursday, when seven Pacific blue marlin were tagged and released, raising the total for the week to 37. Solitary Islands Game Fishing Club, Australia — fishing aboard Silky — lured two of the Pacific blue marlin to move into third place with 850 points, 50 behind the leaders.
In the captain standings, Rob Ellyn of Lightspeed is in front with 1,000 points, with Illusions’ Tim Hicks (857) in second and Highflier’s Guy Terwilliger (700) and Kila Kila’s Gabe Heflin tied for third.
