Makoa Andres pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Hilo All-Stars to a 10-0 five-inning TKO win over Paderborn, Germany on Sunday in the 2013 PONY Baseball World Series in Washington, Pa.
The eight-team tournament for players ages 13-14 runs through Thursday.
In beating Germany (1-1) in its tournament opener, Hilo (1-0) moves on to play Chesterfield, Va. (1-0) at 2 p.m. today in the winners’ bracket.
Andres, who went the five-inning distance to pocket the win, dominated the Germany batters on Sunday.
“Makoa pitched really well again, and that’s what we expected from him,” Hilo coach Eric Kurosawa said. “He threw strikes and moved the ball around. He just did his job for us, and we hit the ball good today.”
Gehrig Octavio led Hilo’s 13-hit attack, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and a solo home run. Daylen Calicdan, Taylor Mondina (double, RBI), Trayden Tamiya (2 RBIs) and Kegan Miura each added 2 hits.
“We’re still getting over the jet-lag, but we should be a lot better by tomorrow (today),” Kurosawa said.
“Chesterfield is a good club, but this is the best (Hilo) team we’ve ever coached. Our kids will be ready to play.”
Kurosawa also thanked “the many supporters who have sent us well-wishes.”
“We feel all of Hawaii is right here with us,” the Hilo coach said.

World Series
Gayla Ha-Cabebe ripped a grand slam and drove in five runs to spark Hilo to an 11-3 TKO win over St. Louis in the RBI Softball World Series on Sunday morning in St. Paul, Minn.
Ha-Cabebe went 3 for 4 in the game with a single, triple and grand slam to highlight the Big Islanders’ 12-hit attack to round out the Nataional League Central pool play. Stacie Doi added two hits, including a solo homer, and Ashlyn Van Zandt had two hits for the Hilo (1-2), which finished third in the pool behind Santo Domingo (3-0) and Houston (2-1), and ahead of St. Louis (0-3).
Chelsea Camello went the six-inning distance to earn the win. She gave up five hits and three runs while striking out three and walking three.
Hilo then came back in the afternoon to edge Atlanta 8-6 in cross-pool action. Leisha Nakagawa had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Big Islanders. Ha-Cabebe had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs while Skylar Thomas added two hits and an RBI.
Aliesa Kaneshiro pitched all seven innings and got the win. She allowed 10 hits and six runs while striking out one and walking one.
Hilo plays Hoboken, N.J. today to wrap up cross-pool play. The single-elimination playoffs start Tuesday, heading into Wednesday’s title game.
“We played pretty well today and our bats are starting to come alive,” Hilo coach Tracy Miyashiro said. “We want to finish up strong tomorrow (today) and be ready to play our best on Tuesday when the games really count. Our goal is to get to the championship game. If we can do that, anything can happen.”
