Man arrested in officer’s death
HONOLULU (AP) — A driver charged with manslaughter in the freeway collision that killed a Honolulu Police Department officer has been arrested.
Scott Frederick Ebert was arrested on Friday.
The arrest came two days after an Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Ebert with manslaughter in the Jan. 21, 2012, death of Officer Garret Davis.
Police said the 28-year-old officer had stopped his patrol car in the left eastbound lane of the H-1 freeway to help a motorist with a blown tire.
Prosecutors said Ebert was speeding at 83 mph when his pickup truck slammed into the back of the patrol car, which burst into flames.
Ebert has posted $100,000 bail.
Plans to exhume soldiers resisted
HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii-based military command responsible for finding, recovering and identifying missing-in-action service members is at odds with the Navy over exhuming unidentified soldiers from the USS Oklahoma.
The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command wants to exhume all of the Dec. 7, 1941 casualties of the USS Oklahoma buried at Punchbowl cemetery.
But the Navy prefers to maintain the “sanctity” of the graves.
It will be up to the Army, which has “next-of-kin” authority over all Punchbowl unknowns.
JPAC Central Identification Laboratory Director John Byrd says the command proposes disinterring remains of more than 330 Oklahoma crew members buried in more than 50 graves.
JPAC also wants to disinter and try to identify crewmen from the battleships California and West Virginia.
Bonsai stolen
from nursery
HONOLULU (AP) — The owner of a Waimanalo nursery is appealing for the return of bonsai trees stolen two weeks ago.
Walter Liew says he wept when he discovered the theft of the trees. He says some have been in his family for 55 years.
Liew says someone broke into Dragon Garden Nurseries over two nights. The thief took his best plants. He says one tree was valued at $40,000 and another at $30,000.
Photographs of the trees were published in his book, “The Living Art of Bonsai.”
Liew says he is taking measures to make sure another theft does not occur.
He says he has installed vision cameras and other security measures.
Kauai County closes Hanamaulu Beach Park at night
HONOLULU (AP) — Kauai County officials say vandalism is the reason behind a decision to close a popular beach park at night.
Starting Monday, Hanamaulu Beach Park will be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Director of Parks and Recreation Lenny Rapozo says in an announcement that community members no longer feel safe in the park and a new gate will lock up the entrance.
County officials say vandals damaged the park in June a few days after it was cleaned. Officials also say pavilion due to be demolished is attracting vagrants.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/19nG1CK) reports day use of the park will continue.
