A Puna man and his son have been charged in an alleged assault of a police officer.

When Puna police responded to a domestic abuse report in Hawaiian Beaches on Saturday, the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Christopher Thomas Gonsalves of Pahoa, allegedly struck and threatened an officer and then fled the scene.

Gonsalves was found and arrested Sunday. He was charged Tuesday afternoon with terroristic threatening, assaulting a police officer and abuse of a family/household member. His bail was set at $22,000.

In addition, detectives arrested Gonsalves’ son, 21-year-old Gordon A.E. Gonsalves of Pahoa Tuesday morning, and charged him at 1:30 p.m. with second-degree hindering prosecution for using force against an officer to allow his father to get away. His bail was set at $500.

Both men are being held at the cellblock pending their initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
