There will be a free family fun day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multipurpose Stadium to benefit Kamalu Kabalis and his family.
The ohana-themed event will feature performances by Lehua Kalima, Rupert Tripp Jr., Pomai Longakit, Positive Motion, Lito Arkangel, a kupuna ukulele group, Taiko drummers and more.
There will be food and craft booths as well as keiki activities, a silent auction, haircuts and massages.
Kabalis, a Hilo resident, suffered major head trauma in a motorcyle accident in March of 2012, despite wearing a helmet. After spending time in medical centers in Hilo, Oahu and California, the 28-year-old Kabalis is back in Hilo but requires 24-hour care.
Proceeds will go toward the Kokua Kamalu Foundation, which was established by Kamalu’s parents, Sodie and Carla Kabalis.

Olaa Sports Academy
registration ongoing
Ola’a Sports Academy is still holding basketball registration for ages 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14, and for T-ball.
Basketball sign-ups are at Mountain View Gym on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m., while T-ball registration is 4-6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at Kurtistown Park.

Griffiths is top shot
at sporting clay event
Tom Griffiths won an O.S.O.K. compact sporting clay shoot in July at the County trap and skeete range.
The 75-target, sub-gauge event featured 22 shooters, and the top guns were: 1. Tom Griffiths, 47 (20 gauge); 2. Elton Endo, 42 (20 gauge); 3. Gina Ha‘o and Michael Tabura, 41 (20 gauge).
The next shoot will be held from 9-3:30 p.m. Oct. 13, and all equipment will be provided by individual participants.

Special Olympics
golf event Aug. 25
Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf will hold its sixth annual tournament Aug. 25 at Volcano Golf and Country Club.
The format will be a four-person modified scramble and each group will include a Special Olympics athlete. Entry fee is $150 per golfer, and Special Olympians will play for free.
The tee time is at 9 a.m. and all proceeds go to Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf.
The entry fee includes the round of golf, cart, lunch and 19th-hole awards and prizes.
