Bobby Lum ran the ball 21 times for 167 yards and a touchdown Saturday and Hawaii Preparatory Academy closed out its preseason schedule Saturday with a hard-fought 13-8 win against visisting Waimea (Kauai).

“Today was a good test for us,” HPA head coach Jordan Hayslip said. “Waimea is a very good football team and we were glad to get the win.”

Lum continues to carry the load for HPA (2-0). His highlight of the day was a 29-yard scamper for a score in the third quarter that was the difference in the game. In a 34-0 victory against Waiakea on Aug. 10, Lum powered for 178 yards and two scores.

“Bobby is a senior leader for us and is such a strong runner,” Hayslip said. “Our guys like to block for him, too.”

The first half was the definition of a defensive struggle. Each team traded numerous three-and-outs through the first two quarters and entered the locker room at halftime tied 0-0.

The scoreboard was slightly more active in the second half.

HPA kicked off the scoring early in the third quarter with a 16-yard strike from junior quarterback Koa Ellis to sophomore wide receiver Justin Perry. Perry added the extra point to put Ka Makani up 7-0.

HPA struck again when Lum scored his touchdown with just over a minute left in the quarter.

Destin Miguel put Waimea on the board with five minutes remaining with a 1-yard plunge, and added the two-point conversion.

Ellis completed 5 of 17 passes for 99 yards and tacked on 58 yards on the ground. Kellen Gillins caught three of Ellis’ passes for 66 yards.

Menehune quarterback Kiliona Russell-Moe was 13 of 18 for 145 yards in the contest, adding a team-high 37 yards on the ground.

The game was a change of pace for HPA. Last weekend, Ka Makani and the Warriors combined for 15 turnovers. HPA and Waimea combined for only two turnovers Saturday — one HPA interception and one Waimea fumble.

Ka Makani will next take the field for Week 1 of BIIF action Aug. 31 against Hilo at home.

Maui 47, Konawaena 37

Maui came out on fire in the second half, scoring three touchdowns in the first four minutes, and the Sabers rode a 40-point second half to a comeback win at War Memorial Stadium.

The trio of running back Dishon Cho, wide receiver Chase Takaki and quarterback Brandon Howes led the way for Konawaena on offense. The defense managed to stifle the potent interior run game of the Sabers, only allowing the short-field TD in the first minute of the game.

After a fumble on the opening kickoff leading to a quick Maui (2-0) touchdown, the Wildcats (0-1) recovered to take firm control of the game, leading 24-7 going into the half.

Konawaena wraps up its preseason schedule Aug. 23 against Hilo.
