Report card on public schools
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii has released its first report card of how public schools are doing under a new accountability system, made possible by a federal waiver from provisions of the No Child Left Behind law.
State education officials say a key result is that nine schools serving a large number of children from low-income families are among 14 considered the highest-performing and highest-growth schools.
The new system uses multiple measures of performance, instead of relying on “Adequate Yearly Progress,” based mostly on reading and math test scores.
The results released Monday based on last school year’s data show the percentage of students proficient in reading and math improved slightly. Students proficient in reading increased to 72 percent, from 71 percent a year ago. Math proficiency was 60 percent, up from 59 percent.
Jurors discuss Waikiki slaying
HONOLULU (AP) — Deliberations continue in the trial of a federal agent charged with murder in a 2011 Waikiki shooting.
The jury resumed deliberations Monday morning. It’s the second day of deliberations after deliberating for a few hours on Thursday.
They are deciding whether State Department Christopher Deedy is guilty of second-degree murder after he shot and killed Kollin Elderts inside a McDonald’s restaurant.
The 29-year-old agent from Arlington, Va., was in Honolulu to help with security for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. He was off-duty when he ended up at the fast-food eatery after bar-hopping with friends.
Man shot by police identified
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A man shot and killed by police on Kauai has been identified as a 21-year-old Kalaheo man facing a second trial on robbery and assault charges.
Mason Saio died in the shooting Friday night. Kauai County officials say police near the Nawiliwili jetty confronted a man holding two guns in a parked car.
Police said the man threw one gun out of the car but pointed the other at officers and was shot.
Saio on Aug. 26 was scheduled to stand trial on assault and robbery charges for an incident in January 2012 at a Koloa gas station in which a clerk was injured. Three other defendants made plea deals. A December trial ended with a hung jury and a mistrial was declared.
