On Tuesday, Dustin James Jose and Jack Vaughn pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery, burglary and assault. Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara ordered them to appear for trial on Nov. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
The victims said that three masked men dressed in black forced their way into two 30th Avenue homes, assaulted two people and stole a purse and a backpack. The victims said the men fled in a pickup truck. One of the victims said she threw a can of pork and beans, which hit the cab of the truck and landed in the truck’s bed.
Jose and Vaughn were arrested later that night in Kurtistown. Police said the can of pork and beans was found in the truck’s bed.
Jose, who also faces unrelated child molestation charges, is free on $60,000 bond, while Vaughn is free on $12,000 bond.
