e Aware! The Undead are invading Hilo on Saturday. The Palace Theater is launching its first annual Zombie Apocalypse to mark the near end of summer and the start of its “Monstrously” awesome fall lineup.

There will be an undead occupation from 5 to 6 p.m. under the Palace marquee as zombies converge. The lobby will open at 6 p.m., and the big event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a zombie contest with prizes followed by the hilarious comedy movie “Zombieland.” But there will also be plenty of activities beforehand, allowing fans to get their “Zombie on.”

A makeup workshop will be on tap in the lobby from 2-5 p.m. The cost is $20/$15.

“Attendees can be transformed by one of our pros, you can learn and perform a transformation upon yourself or bring a friend to transform you and still pay only one materials fee,” said coordinator Robin Worley.

“Later, all local Zombies are encouraged to attend our Zombie Occupation in front of the Palace Theater from 5-6 p.m. on event day,” said Marcia Prose, co-chair for the event. “The Occupation will feature a kiosk for the unprepared, offering on-the-spot, ready-to-attach latex scars and wounds on sale for those critical last minute details,” continued Prose.

The Palace lobby will open at 6 p.m., where zombies and friends can stumble about, terrifying each other. “Be sure to visit our Zombie Emporium where the undead will be selling special zombie menu items such as dessert brains and gruesome severed finger cookies. Remaining scars and wounds will also be available,” said Prose.

“Be ready at 6:30,” cautioned Prose. “All undead are encouraged to participate in our zombie contest. Prizes will be awarded. Zombies are reminded that you will be judged on your “completeness” … your make-up, your costume and your persona, so now’s the time to start practicing your zombie shuffle,” said Prose.

The highlight of the Apocalypse will be the screening of the 2009 comedy “Zombieland,” starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg. A surprise addition to the cast is Bill Murray as himself.

The movie storyline: In the early 21st Century, zombies have taken over America. A shy and inexperienced college student in Texas has survived by following his 30 rules: such as “look in the back seat,” “double-tap,” “avoid public restrooms.” He decides to travel to Ohio to see if his parents are alive. He gets a ride with a boisterous, zombie-hating good-old boy headed for Florida, and soon they confront a young woman whose sister has been bitten by a zombie and wants to be put out of her misery. The sisters were headed to an L.A. amusement park they’ve heard is zombie free. Can the kid from Ohio get to his family? And what about rule 31?”
