The newly renovated Hilo Hawaiian Hotel hosted the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawaii for a reception and tour Tuesday.
“The Hilo Hawaiian was gracious in welcoming our members to see the renovation and taste its new fusion cuisine,” said Carol VanCamp, president of the chamber.
Members toured newly outfitted guest rooms and each of the hotel’s hallways, which featured refurbished wall and floor coverings and new furniture. More than half of the 286 guest rooms on eight floors have been redone. Renovations are to cost $5.8 million and are expected to be complete by the end of October.
The chamber’s monthly Goji Kara (“after hours”) social mixers are designed to encourage fellowship and networking among members while showcasing the activities of local area businesses.
“Our members report that these events are one of the biggest reasons they support our chamber; by providing fun and opportunities to socialize, we attract new members and build friendships, which is what our chamber values are all about,” said Gina Tanouye, social & cultural committee chairperson.
The chamber fosters economic sustainability as well as perpetuates the Japanese cultural heritage on Hawaii Island. Its mission is to promote the well being of our community through business and personal relationships that embody the values of Kahiau & Okage Sama De. In Hawaiian, Kahiau means giving without expecting anything in return. Okage Sama De is a Japanese proverb, which means I am what I am because of you.
The Chamber sponsors the popular annual Taste of Hilo, set this year for Oct. 20; the Chamber hosts business and cultural events and information sessions throughout the year and works with other business organizations as a watchdog over state and county legislation.
